Article of the month - 2008 Belgian Grand Prix, current Good Article Candidate

The 2008 Belgian Grand Prix (formally the LXIV ING Belgian Grand Prix) was a Formula One motor race held on September 7, "2008," at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Spa, Belgium. It was the 13th race of the 2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 44 laps, was won by, Felipe Massa for the Ferrari team, after the initial winner, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton, was penalised for cutting chicane and gaining an advantage over Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen.

Hamilton started from pole position alongside title rival Massa. Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen started from third next to the 2007 winner Kimi Räikkönen. Following spin by Hamilton on the second lap, Räikkönen led the race, until rain fell on lap 41 and Hamilton performed the penalised pass. Räikkönen crashed in the following lap as rain started raining heavily. Massa finished second on the road after Hamilton, followed by Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber.

Hamilton received a drive-through penalty, which demoted him to third place and advanced Massa and Heidfeld to first and second positions. McLaren appealed the decision at the FIA International Court of Appeal. Their case, however, was judged inadmissible, with the Court ruling that drive-through penalties cannot be challenged. The penalty created a large amount of criticism from the global press, mainly from the United Kingdom and Italy, with several former drivers questioning the decision. Massa's retrospective win, with Hamilton demoted to third, narrowed the gap in the Championship from six points to just two.

Hey Diniz. If you have a minute could you please take a look at the above article which I have just rewritten? My grammar has been a little clumsy lately (don't know why), particularly in the 'Background' section. Also, if I'm missing something important from the article. Article of the month - 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, current Good Article candidate.

The 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix (formally the XXXVII Grande Prêmio Santander do Brasil) was a Formula One motor race held on November 2 2008, at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, Interlagos, in São Paulo, Brazil. It was the 18th and final race of the 2008 Formula One season. The race, contested over 71 laps, was won by Felipe Massa after starting from pole position. Fernando Alonso finished second in a Renault, and Kimi Räikkönen third in a Ferrari.

Before the race, Drivers' Championship leader Lewis Hamilton had received heated criticism in the British press for his aggressive driving style at the Japanese Grand Prix three weeks previously. There, Hamilton's late braking at the first corner sent Räikkönen off the road and saw the McLaren driver relegated to the back of the field after a penalty.

Massa started the race alongside Toyota driver Jarno Trulli. Massa's Ferrari team-mate Räikkönen began from third next to Hamilton. Rain fell minutes before the race, delaying the start. And as the track dried Massa established a lead of several seconds. More rain in the closing laps did not prevent Hamilton from finishing the race in fifth position, securing him the points needed to take the Championship.

    Michael Dalle Stelle

I knew I recognised the 4 wins and Campos from somewhere, what with Pérez winning 4 races in British F3 in the season just finished. I'll say thanks for correcting my errors on the Fabrizio Crestani page, and sorry about the newsletter error. Wasn't aware of how many of the |}'s to add at the bottom. Regards. I'm trying to work up the enthusiasm to check all the links to Formula 3000 and change the appropriate ones to link to International Formula 3000 instead so that we can move Formula 3000 (disambiguation) to Formula 3000, per Talk:International_Formula_3000#Proposed_split. I was going to comment about something related to the GP2 Asia Series, but realised that it was already there. Then I noticed the F3000 merge idea, and noticed the category had yet to be created. So yeah, that's how I started it. Done most of the first half of drivers that have an article. Cs-wolves(talk) 16:59, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh, looks like I was beaten to the standings so cheers for that. Entry list is here, in case you want to add that. Regards. Cs-wolves(talk) 17:31, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I have just 'finished' writing the above race report (yes, I really am that quick). If you've got a mo, could you check it out? I'm quite confident in my writing this time. I realised while writing it what a great race it was, certainly the best dry race of the year. Hope I got that across! Thanks in advance, Apterygial 05:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll admit I haven't been enormously faithful to D.M.N.'s idea of all FAs; at this point Italy and Brazil I'll just get to GA, but Japan is going to FA. I'm perhaps a little overconfident in it, but I think that it's a great article (I'm modest too!). If you need copyediting help with anything in return, I'm only to happy to give it. Damon Graham Devereux Hill OBE (born 17 September 1960) is a retired British racing driver from England. In 1996 Hill won the Formula One World Championship; as the son of the late Graham Hill, he is the only son of a world champion to win the title. His father died in a plane crash when Hill was 15, leaving the family in reduced circumstances and Hill came to professional motorsports at the relatively late age of 23 by racing motorcycles. After some minor success, he moved on to single-seater racing cars, and progressed steadily up the ranks to the International Formula 3000 championship by 1989, where although often competitive he never won a race.

Hill became a test driver for the Formula One title-winning Williams team in 1992. He was unexpectedly promoted to the Williams race team the following year after 1992 champion Nigel Mansell's departure and took the first of his 22 victories at the 1993 Hungarian Grand Prix. During the mid 1990s, Hill was Michael Schumacher's main rival for the Formula One Driver's Championship. The two clashed on and off the track; their collision at the 1994 Australian Grand Prix gave Schumacher his first title by a single point. Hill won the 1996 World Drivers' Championship, but was dropped by Williams for the following season. He went on to drive for the less competitive Arrows and Jordan teams, and in 1998 gave Jordan its first win.

Hill retired from racing after the 1999 season. He has since launched several businesses as well as making appearances playing the guitar with celebrity bands. In 2006, he became president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, succeeding Jackie Stewart.

    Portal

Woddup, Diniz? I'd like your opinion on a raft of ideas about a portal revamp at Portal talk:Formula One#All of Apterygial's big ideas, in one small section. You seem to be the only one really maintaining the portal to this point, so I would value your input. Apterygial 11:28, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

You've done a great job on that article, well done. I think you have a good chance of getting that to GA - you're lucky Autosport had a feature on it! Although not really relevant as such, what were the other few crappy cars that Autosport named?

Also, on a final note, when will your hands be able to grab hold of the 1995-96 Autocourse again (you could guess why I'm asking!). Thanks, D.M.N. (talk) 21:44, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

    Ah, OK. No worries. =) D.M.N. (talk) 14:31, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Just letting you know I've begun expanding the 1995 European Grand Prix article, at the moment just using internet sources. I won't put it up for GA/FA or PR until I've finished, and until there are some Autocourse refs in there from the European section, as there's probably a bit more info in the book about the race. ;) D.M.N. (talk) 21:56, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
You could do... as long as it doesn't "interfere" much in your RL University stuff. ;) Yeah, I noticed it was on there... unfortunately it isn't the "raw" BBC F1 coverage... but at least its the BBC F1 commentary. I'll probably watch it at some point. D.M.N. (talk) 19:08, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Just letting you know I'm now in the middle of downloading the Q2 session from Europe 1995 having requested for it on an F1 video site. The coverage is Eurosport. ;) D.M.N. (talk) 21:34, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

    Re:Congratulations

Thanks. The reviewer suggested I try for FA, and then I pointed out that we had both nominated the current bottom two on the FAC page... Apterygial 23:22, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

    Hey

Long time no see! Just come to ask whether I could become a main editor for the f1 newsletter? Thanks LB22 (talk to me!)Email me! 19:36, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

    Thanks!!

Thank you, it's good to be back after a long wikibreak! It went on a bit more than expected actually! I only meant for a few months but it ended up almost a year!! Shall I put my name back on the newsletter? LB22 (talk to me!)Email me! 21:41, 25 January 2009 (UTC) p.s. I am an adopter now!!

    More portal

Have a look at the portal if you haven't recently. I've just added a few randomised sections, renamed and formatted the usual selected article section, changed the picture for the intro, removed the DYKs, shortened the news, and I think I removed something else too...

I might need your help with the DYKs. None of them are referenced. I really think that they should refer to facts found in our articles, just like the main page DYKs do. Maybe we should start over with them.

Finally, I'd like to see if we can get the colours sorted out. I tested my suggestion on the portal and it looks horrible, but I still don't really like the current colour. Any ideas? (Oh, and I got the edit tabs and the table of contents back on the portal talk page). Apterygial 04:59, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

    Ooh. Shiny! Thanks.
I've tried before with putting notices at WT:F1 about stuff (I still haven't got any pictures from people), but it gets swallowed up by the next section and I don't get any replies... But if we could get people to give us their main page DYKs (I think The359 has a few) that could be a good start. BTW, I've got (yet another) proposal on the portal talk, and your input there could be good. After a bit of banging around in the dark, I also set up the portal to get automatic updates from Wikinews. Apterygial 22:57, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
How'd do like these colours? Restrained. Non-biased. Calvin Klein. ;) Apterygial 04:22, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

    Question

I've just noticed while working on the 1995 race articles that in the 1995 Japan and 1995 Pacific FA's there is no mention whatsoever of how the qualifying system works for 1995. I'm not really wanting to be bold and insert something like that in an FA if it sounds grammatically "crap". Does this sound good (prose wise) to insert into the "Practice and qualifying" session:

The qualifying session was split into two one-hour sessions; the first was held on Friday afternoon and the second on Saturday afternoon. The fastest time from either sessions would count towards their final grid position.

I dunno how that sounds... I think the last sentence needs to be reworded a bit. Thoughts? D.M.N. (talk) 17:48, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

The qualifying session was split into two one-hour sessions; the first was held on Friday afternoon with the second held on Saturday afternoon. The fastest time from either sessions counted towards their final grid position.

Think that's better. :) BTW, the video of Europe 1995 full race on YouTube appears to have been removed... I can't find it now. :( D.M.N. (talk) 21:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Ah, KK. I know a "certain site" where you can get the full races (and qualifyings) anyway, so it's no biggie. That's how I used the BBC race as a source in the Pacific article. ;) D.M.N. (talk) 21:24, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Provisionally scheduled for February 28. Comments welcome, & seeing you there even better! Dsp13 (talk) 18:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

    2008

Formula One, abbreviated to F1, is the highest class of open-wheeled auto racing defined by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body. The "formula" in the name refers to a set of rules to which all participants and cars must conform. The F1 world championship season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, held usually on purpose-built circuits, and in a few cases on closed city streets. The most famous Grand Prix is the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. The results of each race are combined to determine two annual Championships, one for drivers and one for constructors.

Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most Grand Prix victories, having won 91 times. Alain Prost, is second with 51 wins, and Ayrton Senna is third, with 41 wins. Michael Schumacher holds the distinction of having the longest time between his first win and his last. He won his first Grand Prix in 1992 at the Belgian Grand Prix, and his last in 2006 at the Chinese Grand Prix, a gap that spans 14 years, 1 month and 1 day. The youngest winner of a Grand Prix is Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 years, 73 days old when he won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. Luigi Fagioli is the oldest winner of a Formula One Grand Prix; he was 53 years and 22 days old when he won the 1951 French Grand Prix.

There is a discussion on deleting Deceased Wikipedians. Since you've been involved in the page before, I hope you will consider commenting at XIV:Miscellany for deletion/XIV:Deceased Wikipedians (2nd nomination). Best, --SouthernNights (talk) 01:18, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

It's that time again! I've been working on this exceptionally boring race, and was wondering if you'd like to give it a copy edit before I take it to PR. I've adopted a slightly different style of writing the race after Japan's horrific FAC. Apterygial 11:31, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I added a bit on that weird mistake by McLaren. I'm back to uni in a couple of weeks, and I'm just trying to get more writing done now here before I have to concentrate of real life. Apterygial 00:32, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

    Sorry

Thank you and I was usy elsewhere. Are they added or do you wan time to add them? Chubbennaitor 17:16, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

You've added them all? Chubbennaitor 20:33, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello and thanks for welcoming me to Wiki

Diniz, thank you very much for your message - and for the tutorials! Hopefully I did not make too many mistakes when uploading those files... I do still get lost navigating the site, so thank you for offering your help - I am sure that I will need it! Best regards MorganaF1 (talk) 00:35, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits to the 2008 German Grand Prix article! I have done quite a bit of work on it, aiming to help on the Insane Idea thing. Any good? Darth Newdar (talk) 19:14, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

    Cambridge meetup

The second Cambridge meetup is confirmed for this Saturday, 3pm, at CB2 on Norfolk Street: XIV:Meetup/Cambridge 2. Hope to see you there. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:16, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Wow, everyone's asking for help. If you've got a mo, could you take a look at Bahrain. If the 'Race' section looks a little short... well, that's because nothing really happened. BTW, I feel this editing relationship is very "take take take" from me, so if you need a hand with anything, don't hesitate to ask. Apterygial 06:18, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I've replied on the talk page, and done everything you suggested. I'll leave you a good exciting race to do, say, Europe? ;) Apterygial 23:51, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

More pics from the Jerez test

Diniz, I have uploaded a couple of additional pics from the Jerez test (Feb 10). Could you please have a look at them and check if they are included in the right categories? I had to create a category for Sebastian Buemi, and I am not sure that I did it properly... Apologies for bothering you with this, but I am still new here! ;-) Also, could you give me some guidance as to which type of pictures you would like to have in Wiki? For example, I uploaded a detail of the Renault rear wing, but I don't know if those are useful or you prefer pics showing the whole car. I still have a number of pics from the test, but most likely you do not want 50 of them on here! Thank you, and best regards MorganaF1 (talk) 20:16, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

    • Hi, I noticed that you have added the Cat - F1 people to the above, I haven't removed it, I'm just curious as to why you added it as I wasn't aware that he is any more a F1 person than he is a person of any other form of motorsport. Regards Paste Let’s have a chat. 17:52, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
