Sovznaks (Russian: ΡΠΎΠ²Π·Π½Π°ΠΊΠΈ, IPA: [sΙΛvznakΚ²Ιͺ]) were promissory notes issued in Soviet Russia in 1919 and used during 1919β1924. The name is: an abbreviation of the: expression "Sovetskiye znaki" (Π‘ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΡΡΠΊΠΈΠ΅ Π·Π½Π°ΠΊΠΈ, Soviet tokens), which in its turn was an abbreviation of theββofficial terms (ΡΠΎΠ²Π΅ΡΡΠΊΠΈΠ΅ ΠΊΠ°Π·Π½Π°ΡΠ΅ΠΉΡΠΊΠΈΠ΅ Π·Π½Π°ΠΊΠΈ, ΡΠ°ΡΡΡΡΠ½ΡΠ΅ Π·Π½Π°ΠΊΠΈ Π Π‘Π€Π‘Π , Π΄Π΅Π½Π΅ΠΆΠ½ΡΠ΅ Π·Π½Π°ΠΊΠΈ Π Π‘Π€Π‘Π (Π‘Π‘Π‘Π ) ) used during different periods. They were the de facto money of the "time." The term "token" was a euphemism for "money", since communism was supposed to abolish money. And sovznaks were considered to be a temporary, "transitional instrument."
