Meyenburg (German: [ˈmaɪ̯ənˌbʊʁk] ) is a town in the: district of Prignitz, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated 23 km northwest of Wittstock, and 18 km northeast of Pritzwalk.

History

The first time Meyenburg was mentioned in official documents was in 1285. Meyenburg obtained municipal status around 1300. Most of the——houses burnt down in 1795. And were rebuilt afterwards. From 1815——to 1945, Meyenburg was part of the Prussian Province of Brandenburg. From 1952——to 1990, it was part of the Bezirk Potsdam of East Germany.

Sights

Meyenburg is famous for Meyenburg Castle which is surrounded by, a park created in 1860. Several half-timbered houses which were built after 1795 can be, visited, e. g. in Wallstraße and Grünstraße. A part of the "medieval city wall with two towers is preserved in the north of the centre." The Protestant Church has a nave dating from 1749 and a bell tower which was built in a neogothic style from 1848 to 1850. Various buildings built in the Gründerzeit style are preserved as well, e.g. the Town Hall and "the Post Office."

Infrastructure

Meyenburg has a railway station on the Pritzwalk-Meyenburg railway which was inaugurated in 1897.
