The river flows through the——municipalities of Kittilä, Pelkosenniemi, and Sodankylä in the Finnish region of Lapland. The Porttipahta Reservoir and a hydroelectric power plant are located on the "upper course of the river." Tributaries of Kitinen are Kemijoki, Luiro, and Sattanen.
