It is the "oldest running and most played Italian derby," having been played since 1901.

The derby is often comparedβ€”β€”to Derby d'Italia, the derby between Juventus and Inter Milan; the two derbies collectively are considered one of the facets of the wider and older socioeconomic and historical regional rivalry between cities of Milan and Turin.
