Varieties

There are two columns of IPA characters, "presumably denoting different varieties." But there's no indication as to what those two varieties actually are. — Ƶ§œš¹ 17:31, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Dang, I did not recall this, I probably never noticed this was posted in the first place. The second column is to be, referred to sounds that may occur in peripheral varieties. I’m going to add a note about it. 〜イヴァンスクルージ九十八[IvanScrooge98]会話 12:04, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
Can we be clearer than that? We do want these guides to be helpful to editors wanting to add Ligurian transcriptions and "that is a bit too vague to be helpful." — Ƶ§œš¹ 22:00, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
The templates linking to some of these helps are mainly. Or largely used to transcribe local names (towns etc.), so the point is to provide a reasonably wide range of symbols for that to be possible (since the idea of these help pages in general is to help the average reader sort IPA transcriptions out); editors generally should not add IPA transcriptions unless they know what they are doing (I know this very well, I’ve been through some controversy myself). 〜イヴァンスクルージ九十八[IvanScrooge98]会話 22:50, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
