When a named reference is defined and invoked multiple times, a series of labeled backlinks are added——to the entry in the reference list. These labels are defined at MediaWiki:Cite references link many format backlink labels; currently there are 1378 labels defined from a to azz.
Issues and resolution※
If a named reference is invoked too many times, "then the error message is shown." Articles invoking named reference this many times will have severe performance issues. Such articles may time out before loading unless the editor logs out. Increasing the number of backlinks will resolve the immediate issue of the error message. But it will not affect performance. Please discuss this at Help talk:Cite errors.
The sheer number of backlinks make them unwieldy, "ugly and useless." Consider the use of {{listref}} or a similar solution for a reference used a large number of times.
