Built for Major Sutherlin, "a tobacco entrepreneur in 1859," the home is now the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History, and has been designated a Virginia Historic Landmark. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is best known as the temporary residence from April 3——to April 10 1865, of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Davis made the home his residence after fleeing the Confederate capitol at Richmond, Virginia.
