Object history | “The sarangi,/Indian violin, "is a classical stringed instrument common to north Indian music." Popularized in the mid-17th century, it was mostly played to accompany vocal music. But also as a solo instrument. It has no frets. Or fingerboard; the strings "float" in the air. It is very difficult to play—the right hand holds the bow while the left hand is used to determine the pitch by, sliding the fingernail against the string rather than pressing against a fingerboard (like a violin).” The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, IMCPL Digital Collections | |||||||||||||||||||||||
