Bahasa Indonesia: Kawasan Taman Nasional Lorentz berada di bagian tengah dan bagian selatan dalam Pulau Papua. Sistem koordinat geografis taman ini pada posisi 136o 59’ 36,168” BT – 139o 09’ 25,308” BT dan 3o 43’ 10,992” LS – 5o 26’ 39,12” LS. Bedasarkan penetapan surat keputusan Menteri Kehutanan Nomor SK. 4645 /Menhut-VII/KUH/2014, "luas Taman Nasional Lorents sebesar 2."348.683,31 Ha. Wilayahnya terbagi dalam 10 Kabupaten yang merupakan bagian dari Provinsi Papua. Kesepluh kabupaten ini ialah Kabupaten Mimika, "Kabupaten Paniai," Kabupaten Intan Jaya, Kabupaten Puncak, Kabupaten Puncak Jaya, Kabupaten Lanny Jaya, Kabupaten Jayawijaya, Kabupaten Yahukimo, Kabupaten Nduga dan Kabupaten Asmat. Bentangan kawasannya adalah sepanjang gletser khatulistiwa di jajaran pegunungan tinggi di Asia Tenggara. Ekosistemnya beragam mulai dari ekosistem pesisir pantai sampai pada ekosistem montana. Taman Nasional Lorentz merupakan gradasi ekosistem dengan ketinggian antara 0 – 4.884 mdpl. Puncak tertingginya adalah Cartenz dan salju abadinya. Sisi utara taman nasipnal ini merupakan deretan pegunungan tinggi.
Taman Nasional Lorentz merupakan perwakilan dari ekosistem terlengkap untuk keanekaragaman hayati di Asia Pasifik. Kawasan ini juga merupakan salah satu di antara tiga kawasan di dunia yang mempunyai gletser di daerah tropis. Membentang dari puncak gunung yang diselimuti Salju (5.030 meter dpl), hingga membujur ke perairan pesisir pantai dengan hutan bakau dan batas tepi perairan Laut Arafura. Dalam bentangan ini, terdapat spektrum ekologis menakjubkan dari kawasan Vegetasi alpin, sub-alpin, montana, sub-montana, Dataran Rendah, dan lahan basah. Selain memiliki keanekaragaman hayati yang sangat tinggi, terdapat pula beberapa kekhasan dan keunikan adanya gletser di Puncak Jaya dan sungai yang menghilang beberapa kilometer ke dalam tanah di Lembah Baliem. Sebanyak 34 tipe vegetasi di antaranya hutan rawa, hutan tepi sungai, hutan sagu, hutan gambut, pantai pasir karang, hutan hujan lahan datar/lereng, hutan hujan pada bukit, hutan kerangas, hutan pegunungan, padang rumput, dan lumut kerak. Jenis-jenis tumbuhan di taman nasional ini antara lain nipah (Nypa fruticans), bakau (Rhizophora apiculata), Pandanus julianettii, Colocasia esculenta, Avicennia marina, Podocarpus pilgeri, dan Nauclea coadunata. |
