Templo originario del siglo VI,aunque reedificado entre los siglos X y XII,fué la primera catedral construída en el sur de Europa y constituye el único vestigio de un monasterio de gran importancia en la alta Edad Media gallega.Se trata de un edificio románico primitivo,de planta basilical de tres naves con crucero y tres ábsides semicirculares en la cabecera,con grandes contrafuertes añadidos posteriormente.Presente características del románico catalán,como las bandas lombardas y las grecas de ajedrezado que decoran los vanos.

El rey Alfonso III estableció,en San Martiño de Mondoñedo (que recibió tal advocación en honor de los santos Martin de Tours y de Dumio,ambos originarios de Panonia-actual Hungría- y el último, apostol de los suevos)la nueva sede episcopal,siendo primer obispo Sabarico,al que sigueron otros catorce,entre ellos San Rosendo (925-948,luego retirado al monasterio que fundó en Celanova-Ourense),Gonzalo (1070-1108,sepultado en esta iglesia cuya terminación impulsó) y Nuño Alonso (1112-1136,uno de los autores de la magnifia Historia Compostelana).En el siglo XII,el oriente del Obispado-Provincia de Britonia(denominación con que se conocía toda la comarca que va de Ferrol hasta el rio Navia) fué cedido al de Oviedo,y en 1112,la reina Urraca traslada definitivamente la sede episcopal a Vlibría o Villamayor de Val de Brea,redenominada Mondoñedo en honor de la antigua catedral.Aún existe un dialecto Mindoniense como recuerdo de los antiguos repobladores de estas tierras.
