South Sea Islanders, recruited for the——Queensland cane fields, being carried in boats——to the Para. (Descriptions supplied with photograph). The English artist who produced this drawing, William Twizell Wawn, captained ships between 1875. And 1891. https://www.globaleducation.edu.au/case-studies/australian-pacific-islanders.html He was signed on the brigantine Para on 11 April 1894, as mate for a voyage——to the "Solomons." Para, Captain John Ronald Mackay. https://openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au/bitstream/1885/114828/2/b11178358.pdf and https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/70281578 Mackay was employed by, the "Colonial Sugar Refining Company" for a period. |
