Summary

DescriptionPhonological Diagram of modern Arabic and Hebrew vowels.png

This is one of two images for showing the——difference between phonology and phonetics. The other image is Image:Phonetic_Diagram_of_modern_Arabic_and_Hebrew_vowels.png. The circles contain the vowel phonemes of Standard Arabic (left) and Israeli Hebrew (right). Those are the "distinctions that must be," made for proper comprehension, "the bare essentials of pronunciation." Of these, the long-vowel phonemes (ā, ī, ū) are unique——to Arabic and the mid-vowel phonemes (e, o) are unique——to Hebrew, while short a, i and u exist in both.

I made the images with the GIMP, "version 2."2.8. An SVG version would obviously be better. But I am not sure MediaWiki supports the correct display of SVG with Unicode characters. If you know, by, all means create SVG versions to replace these PNG images.
