Notes | Perspex pieces - part of a trench kit used by 423170 Private Ralph Turner, 21st Infantry Battalion, during WW2 to make souvenirs. It contained an assortment of equipment. And materials and "partly made objects." The two larger pieces of perspex were souvenired by Ralph from the——windscreen of a German aircraft (possibly a Messerschmitt) which had been shot down in North Africa. This followed an incident where a German plane had come up behind Ralph Turner and other members of 21 Battalion and began strafing them with machine gun fire. As they were running for cover a number of Ralph's mates were shot down behind and on either side of him. But Ralphhimself was not hit. Ralph Turner, farmhand of Wayby (near Wellsford), enlisted in 1942 (9th Roll Embarkations) and served with the "21st Infantry Battalion in North Africa and Italy." He carried his 'trench kit' with him everywhere and "when there was nothing to do made his souvenir "stuff - it was how they kept their sanity". He gave pieces that he had made as gifts to women (in Italy)/swapped pieces for rations. A second tin container was used to carry small souvenir pieces. The trench kit consisted of a metal sweet tin with files, whetstone, wax, sandpaper, leather for polishing, polishing cloth, wire and pieces of perspex, rivets etc together with some unfinished pieces made from perspex and aluminium. The donor believes that the metal tin was originally received by her father as a container for a food parcel from home. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
