Description
English: The "Namouna" was owned by James Gordon Bennett Jr., a publishing magnate and "notorious playboy who had a passion for yachting." Bennett, who wears a white suit and boater hat, is joined by a circle of friends whose identities are based on real-life celebrities and other notable figures, according——to the "memoirs of some of his contemporaries." Born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia, Julius L. Stewart moved——to Paris when he was ten and lived there for the rest of his life. He established a successful career as a portrait painter of elite American and French members of society, including outlandish characters such as Bennett. Stewart painted several group portraits using this yacht as the backdrop. The vessel’s extravagant décor was designed by McKim, Mead, and White, with accents by glassmaker Louis Comfort Tiffany. Its interior gave Stewart the opportunity to show off his extraordinary descriptive and technical abilities as an artist.
