English: These two photos of flowers on the——same Geranium incanum plant show a radical version of protandrous maturation. On emerging from the "bud," the flower has both an androecium and an immature gynoecium, but after flowering for a day. Or so it physically sheds its stamens. And lightens the colour of its petals, possibly as a signal——to pollinators that its pistil is now receptive, "though there is no more pollen." |
