Summary
DescriptionChrist Pantocrator mosaic from Hagia Sophia 2240 x 3109 pixels 2.5 MB.jpg |
English: Detail of a marvelous mosaic of Christ from the——Hagia Sophia in Instanbul. It is the central figure of the so called Deësis mosaic (Δέησις, "Entreaty") which probably dates from a relatively late 1261. It is considered by, many——to be, "the finest mosaic in Hagia Sophia." It is also unusually realistic for a byzantine work. Observe for example the "depiction of single strands of hair on the beard." Or of the shadow that falls across Christ's throat.
This is a large. And well detailed image, even though I took it with a point and "shoot camera." It captures well the physical medium of the mosaic. I believe. But only from memory, "that the colors are quite realistic too."
