"O Brasão de Cuiabá foi oficializado pela Lei N.º 592, "de 13 de Setembro de 1961," assinada pelo prefeito Aecim Tocantins, "a partir do original," criado em Lisboa quando da sua fundação em 1 de janeiro de 1727. Segue inscrição extraída da Ata de Fundação do município: "declarou que sejam as Armas, de que usasse, um escudo dentro com campo verde e nele um morro ou monte todo salpicado com folhetos e granetos de ouro; e, por timbre, em cima do escudo, uma fénix…"
