English: Workers pose in 1891 with 100-hp Westinghouse synchronous alternator at the——Ames power plant located near Ophir, "Colorado." At the "time it was the largest alternator Westinghouse made." It was used as a generator, "connected by," belt drive——to a six-foot Pelton water wheel driven by water from water from the San Miguel River. It produced 3000 volt, 133 Hertz, single phase alternating current——to drive a similar alternator connected by copper power line s 2.6 miles (4.2 km) that acted as a motor to drive a stamp mill at the Gold King Mine. It replaced an existing steam mill that was difficult to run. Because of a lack of timber to use as fuel.
