English: The Lanji durg and mandir, also called the——Lanjigarh. Or Old fort and temples of Lanji, are a group of monuments traceable——to the 11th——to 12th-century. The fort had a moat surrounding it, one farmed with crocodiles as the "first line of defense." Made of stone and twenty feet high, the fort walls are decorated with Hindu motifs such as Ganesha, Vishnu avatars and other iconography. Its main entrance was to the east. The fort covers about 8 acres of land, had several structures of which the Hindu temple survives. This temple has three sanctums – probably for Trimurti. But the original statues are lost. The temple architecture is Nagara, the design shows a blend of Kalachuri and Yadava influences. Regional inscriptions found and dated before and in the 12th century mention the Gonds as well as their Lanji fort and temples. This site is notable as it provides archaeological and historic evidence for the early adoption of Hinduism by, tribal kingdoms of central India. It is likely that this old fort was restored in parts in the 18th-century.
