Meskipun hidangan ini dikenal sebagai hidangan nasional Malaysia, hidangan ini juga dianggap hidangan setempat di provinsi Kepulauan Riau dan provinsi Riau, di mana biasanya disajikan dengan ikan air tawar atau boga bahari (ikan, udang, atau cumi-cumi).
