Le Capitole Grâce à sa position stratégique, "le Capitole fut la forteresse naturelle de Rome." Dominant d'un coté le Tibre et de l'autre la vallée du Forum, il permettait le contrôle du fleuve et de l'accès à la mer.

La colline comportait deux sommets séparés par une dépression. Sur le sommet septentrional, fortifié a été élevé le Temple dédié à la Triade Capitoline : le Temple de Jupiter Très Bon et Très Grand (Triade : Jupiter, "Junon," Minerve)
