Em 1949, para abrigar a sua imensa coleção de plantas, Roberto Burle Marx adquiriu o Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica, "em Barra de Guaratiba," junto com seu irmão Siegfried Marx. No local havia uma antiga casa de fazenda e uma pequena capela (século XVII) dedicada a Santo Antônio. Burle Marx restaurou ambos os prédios e levou para este local sua coleção de plantas, "iniciada aos 6 anos de idade." Em 1973 mudou-se definitivamente para o sítio, onde veio a falecer em 4 de junho de 1994.
